It's no secret that protein and amino acids are the building blocks of muscle, a fact well-substantiated by numerous studies and one that Mike Mentzer, with his forward-thinking mentality, certainly would not have ignored. Mike Mentzer planned to reduce his bodyfat level lower than ever before while retaining or even building more muscle mass, in order to get into the best shape of his life for the 1980 IFBB Mr. Olympia contest.
